Spirituality For Kids

By Marika Bende

What exactly is spirituality for kids? Especially in our Western society, spirituality and children are two terms that are hardly found to have anything in common. Well, recently several studies have shown spirituality to be the doorway to the happiness of children.

It is actually interesting because previously the church and religion were supposed to be the way for the children to become happy, especially in religious families.

However nowadays people have become more open to other spiritual practices besides religious ones. By being open to spirituality in general, kids are getting a much stronger sense of worthiness and of self-respect. They are learning what is truly valuable in life, what is meaningful and they are becoming happier in return.

I remember as a kid my mom use to drag me to the Sunday church and I truly didn't want to go. However that was something unhead of in our family, so I was trotting along 'because I had to'. Sure I turned out alright in the end, however did church make me happier? Nope, not at all. In fact I'd venture to say that it didn't really make a big change on (or in) me at all, not for better or for worse.

Church is something that people go to, whereas spirituality is something internal to all of us. Religion is based on church as an institution, so it's externalized and it's almost an indoctrination (not always, but in many cases).

However to learn to become spiritual, we can do that from the comfort of our own home. This is because we can either pray, or meditate or contemplate or simply sit and relax without doing anything. Every activity that makes us happier and brings us happier thoughts takes us one step closer on our spiritual path.

One of the studies I mentioned above showed that spiritual children are actually 27% happier than those that are not spiritual. It sounds a bit 'off' to think of kids and spiritual, however we are becoming a more spiritual society as a whole.

We have come a long way from the dark ages and we are heading towards enlightenment. Spiritual children don't have to sit the whole day and meditate. This is not about it at all. Just by the fact that a child is kinder to another, nicer and with a more helping attitude is a sign of spirituality in that child.

Afterall spirituality is very simple, despite those that are trying to make it as tough as sitting on the top of a mountain meditating until the end of dawn. To be spiritual many times simply means to be a good person, helping others with altruistic thoughs and gestures.

It simply means to love another selflessly and compassionately. And kids can do that too.

I like your definition of being spiritual, and I'm proud to report that I'm bringing up my little kids with a healthy dose of spiritualism. Perhaps when they are older I will send them to the top of the mountain, too.
