Dawanda vs Etsy stores
By Marika Bende
After Ebay, Etsy became the next best thing in selling your handmade unique artisan jewelry online. However a few months ago somebody, a German jewelry maker, wrote a comment on my blog about a new artisan shop in Europe, called Dawanda.com. I checked it out and signed up right away. The site is much smaller than Etsy, since it's a rather 'late bloomer', however so far I've had a few sales there. Not many, granted, but a steady 1-2 items a month. And this with very little advertising really. I advertised a bit on my blog, and some friends visited it as well and purchased, however on Etsy one really needs to push himself/herselt to advertise if wants to get a sale. On the other hand, Etsy is big - and if I want to buy supplies, me being in Europe, I find it is much cheaper. And there are plenty of product categories and items within them to choose from. Also Etsy is mostly geared towards Americans - not that it's not internationally represented, however percentage wise US really holds the winning ball, while Dawanda, being a site started in Germany, is naturally mostly attracting Europeans - again, having also people from other continents as well, just in a relatively smaller number. But all this is good so, because we Europeans also need an outlet to make our products known, and generally is good that there is a stronger awareness in Europe about small businesses, about artisan items, be it jewelry (or jewellery how the Europeans call it), or hand made greeting cards, or paintings, or what not. So I think that Etsy and Dawanda can co-exist very nicely together, and each one is filling a nice niche where the other one can't.
